The Gargoyle Incident

A couple of weeks ago, Dani and I had just finished the annual post-Christmas stuff-everything-back-in-boxes-and-move-it-out-to-the garage ritual, and were sitting back to watch a little TV.

No sooner had we found something to watch, then Athos (Dani's 85 lb. half-Rottweiller "lap dog") jumps up into her lap to make himself comfortable. He's a talkative dog, so we're used to him expressing himself, and we tried to ignore his growsing and chuffing and general noise-making as he got himself comfortable. Pretty much business as usual for him.

But, several minutes later, he's still complaining. Short barks, the occasional whine, more chuffing and general displeasure. I look over at him to tell him to shut up (it's kinda hard listening to the TV with all that going on) and notice him looking up at the top of one of our bookcases.

On the top of that bookcase, we have a small gargoyle statue. It's about 10 inches tall by about 8 wide. He's been up there since we moved in and, for at least the past year, he's been wearing a santa hat. But we'd taken off the hat, and put it away with the rest of the Christmas stuff, so now he was sitting on top of the bookcase, apparently glaring down at us.

We'd missed one of the Santa hats in our cleaning frenzy, so I grabbed the extra and dropped it back on the gargoyle's head, making sure his eyes were at least partially covered, then sat down to see what Athos would do. He glanced up at the gargoyle, sniffed once and laid his head down in Dani's lap.

We're both laughing at this point, and Dani says "no, that can't really be it", so I take the hat off once again. No sooner do I remove the hat, than Athos jumps down and plants himself in front of the bookcase, glaring up at the obviously dangerous and/or demented gargoyle that he was, most assuredly, protecting us from.

I reached up and put the Santa hat back on the gargoyle, Athos watching the entire time. I sat down again, and he looked over at me, looked back up at the gargoyle once again, then trotted over and sat down next to Dani again.

Needless to say, the gargoyle's still wearing the Santa hat today. Presumably, he will always be wearing the Santa hat.

Yes, Pepper used to get very uppity about Annie (the cat) sitting on that carpeted shelf area overlooking the living room. This was when we first got him. Apparently, Pepper's eyes are so poor that Annie (who he knew quite well on the floor) became a threatening creature up high. You might want to have Athos' eyes checked. Pepper now can't see well enough to realize that Annie is actually up there, so he has stopped jumping up and howling and barking at her. I kinda miss it.
